Good Witch | 2020

Concept + Title + Design + Animation

Context

Refresh the long and outdated Good Witch opening title sequence with a shorter title card, opening up programming space and enhancing the series with a contemporary look.

Solution

Hone in on the important themes and stories seen throughout the show, which include the sense of family, their roots, magical intuition, and Grey House; The centerpiece of the show, and home to the main protagonist, Cassie Nightingale.

Creative Development

Celestial Forest/Family Tree

The Merriwick Family line is an important character in the Good Witch movies/series and a past family tree project is brought into one of the episodes while a new character is discovering her connection to the Merriwick line. This concepts uses the family tree and places it within a celestial forest type setting to connect the “magical intu-ition” the Merriwick characters seem to have.

Celestial/Ethereal

Continuuing the use of celestial symbols (a common visual in witch stories).
This time, to give it more of a magical feel, it is given an ethereal treatment. Using stars, constellations, and nebulas.

Travel Poster

While the title implies this show is all about Cassie Nightingale. Stepping back, Good Witch is really a show about the cozy town of Middleton and the people who reside there. What a better way to really show the town as it’s own character by creating a travel poster look to highlight it’s warm and mystical charm as a destination.

Style Frames

...move away from whimsical

Now, the main objective is to primarily focus on Cassie’s deep roots within her family. Using elements like a family tree, both literally and graphically.

Completely removing the tree, we instead use Grey House, Cassie’s home in Middleton, as the focal point of the title open. The moon shining in the background gives a subtle nod to cassie’s enchanted insight and magical intuition, with the family tree bracket as deep roots in the Merriwick line.
